Hiking - South Africa

To experience the grandeur of South Africa’s wildlife, flora and fauna close up get out your hiking boots and take to roads

Like so much else in South Africa hiking tours are as abundant as they are varied. Exposed, grass clad highlands or mountain landscape, or deserted, stony coastlines… there are trails to suit all levels, regardless of stamina or mountain climbing ability.

Unique nature experience

However, degree of difficulty is measured not only on ascent and descent, but largely also on what can be at times extreme climatic conditions, from the scorching sun of the Kalahari to frost and snow on the peaks of Natal Drakensberg.

Nature conservation is a high priority in South Africa and the number of hikers allowed to wander unhindered in protected areas is strictly limited. This provides the traveller with a unique experience of vast unpeopled landscape.

Short or longer hikes

You could choose an easy one-day hike, alone, along well signposted paths or longer trails accompanied by expert guides.

Most private game reserves provide wilderness trails led by experienced and armed rangers for those who want to view the savanna’s animals close up.

Although hiking trails are dotted throughout the country four areas stand out for their outstanding beauty and popularity: Cape Town, Cedarberg, Garden Route and Drakensberg.
