beiras

Land full of history, this region is called Beiras Ude due to its location between Portugal’s two main rivers: the Douro to the north and the Tagus in the South. Moving towards the coastline, the mountains give way to long sandy beaches touched by the Atlantic Ocean, where you can find a milder climate.
The struggle for independence left a heritage of impressive castles and fortified towns. You should plan your trip to include a visit to the Beira province’s many historical villages, each guarded by castles built at the orders of the first kings of Portugal to defend the kingdom, and standing in the remains of even earlier presences – Romans, Visigoths, moors and Christians.
The country’s highest mountain, the Serra da Estrela, emerges in the center of this region, where some of its handsome little villages and self catering villas offer quality accommodation along with Portugal’s famous hospitality.
