One of the highest motorable roads in the world. Khardung-la is gateway to Nubra Valley, en route have a magnificent view of the surrounding mountains which includes Parcha Khangri, Stok Khangri etc.
Visit Phyang and Spituk Gompas. Phyang Gompa is 20 kms from Leh on the right side of Leh-Srinagar road. The beautiful statues and Thankas are worth seeing. Spituk Gompa, which lies on the right side of Srinagar-Leh road, is about 6 kms short of Leh Proper. Some very interesting Thankas are pride of this monastery. Afternoon, visit Stok and Matho Gompas. Stok Palace Museum is about 12 kms from Leh across Indus River. It houses some old statues and other equipment. Matho is about 6 kms from Stok, and houses some incredible statues and paintings.
The Nubra Valley lies in the north of Leh and is accessible over the Khardungla [18,380 ft] one of the highest motorable roads in the world. The valley is on the trade route from Leh to Kharga via Saser and Karakoram passes. Apart from unparalled trekking opportunities the valley houses several Buddhist monasteries such as Sumar [Khagar] and 350 years old Diskit Gompa famous for its mural. From Khardmag is drive to the village of Kharchung and then through starkly beautiful countryside to the TCP at Khalsar where permits have to be registered / checked. From here one has to turn to the left of Shyok River and drive for about 24 kms. over a narrow steep road to Diskit.
