OPTIONAL EXCURSIONS FROM MOMBASA

Mombasa City Tour – Full Day

Visit to Fort Jesus (now a National Museum), the Old Harbor where you may see the traditional Arabic Dhows at the docks. The most interesting part of this tour is that tall buildings with ornate intricately carved balconies overshadow the narrow streets and alleyways. The tour also includes visits to mosques and Hindu temples.

Dinner on the Tamarind Dhow

Transfer from the Hotel to the Tamarind Restaurant where you will board the Dhow. Sail down Tudor Creek past Fort Jesus. A wonderful seafood dinner is served on board the dhow whilst a live band entertains you.

Wasini Island – Full Day

Pick up from the hotel in the early morning and drive south to a tiny fishing village not far from the Tanzanian border. A Swahili sailing ship (Dhow), now motorized for flexibility, carries you through an enchanting seascape of islets and reefs to the marvels of the under water world of Kisite. After snorkeling, you are served a gargantuan seafood lunch on the ancient island of Wasini. If you wish you can visit the Muslim village at Wasini. Return to your hotel in the late afternoon.

Shimba Hills – Full Day

Pick up from the hotel in the early morning and drive to the Shimba Hills National Reserve.

It has a unique and botanically rich coastal rainforest. Two of Kenyan’s most beautiful orchids can be found here. Another rare species, unique to the reserve, is the sable Antelope with its handsome near -black coat. Game includes; buffalo, elephant, giraffe, lion, leopard and several primates. The best places to see wildlife are on the flat grasslands near the spectacular Sheldrick’s falls and on the Lango plains near Giriama point with a tremendous view over rolling parkland to the escarpment, from where you can look out to the Indian Ocean. There are a number of short walking trails at elephant lookout, Pengo Hill and the falls. You will stop for lunch at the Shimba Hills Lodge.
