Safari Driver / Guides

Our English speaking driver / guides are familiar with routes and local conditions. They have an excellent knowledge of wildlife, local people and other local attractions. They are expert game spotters. The safari driver / guides are vital to the success of any tour and therefore Liberty Africa Safaris have gone to great lengths to put together an unbeatable team, who are dedicated to providing a helpful, attentive and knowledgeable service to our clients. Some driver / guides speak an additional foreign language such as; Hebrew, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Japanese. Every attempt will be made to provide such driver / guides when specially requested.

Local Couriers / Tour Escorts

Some of our more specialized tours include the services of a local courier, in addition to the services of the driver / guides. These couriers have been carefully selected. Their life in Africa has provided them with immense knowledge of local conditions, customs and people. They really know and love the bush and their own enthusiasm and avid interest will ensure our clients gain maximum benefit from these specialized tours. There are free-lance couriers in East Africa that can be arranged for tours requiring the services of an expert in a particular field, such as, botany, zoology, ornithology, photography, marine biology, archaeology, anthropology, geology etc. However, these people are much in demand and therefore bookings should be made as far in advance as possible. Please see under Guide Profiles.

Tour Leaders

Bona-fide tour leaders accompanying a group of 15 or more full paying adult tour participants are entitled to free land cost (except park fees). Tour Leaders should be warned that hotels do not normally allocate the superior rooms to free tour leaders.

GUIDE PROFILES

ALEX WALKER

Kenyan-born Alex has been guiding and administrating high profile East African safaris for the last 15 years. With extensive knowledge of Kenya, Tanzania and Sudan, Alex began his training as a tracker and hunter with his father at the age of five: it has proved to be his vocation.

Apprenticing at seventeen with Robin Hurt and Danny McCallum, Alex qualified as a fully licensed professional hunter at nineteen and has hunted in Tanzania, Botswana, Sudan, Central Africa and Kenya.

Today, Alex guides a broad spectrum of hunting, photographic and wing-shooting trips in Tanzania, Botswana and Kenya. He has also founded one of Kenya’s most well-respected film and production companies.

CHRIS BRENNAN

Chris’ passion for wildlife and conservation began in 1955 and was strengthened even more so when he assisted with the production of “Ivory Bloody Ivory”; filmed in Tsavo during the elephant poaching crisis. Chris has worked in remote areas such as Southern Sudan, Tanzania, Djibouti, Yemen, and Gabon; involving himself in anti-poaching programmes and more recently several BBC productions, including the very popular “Big Cat Diary”, all of which makes him a very interesting man to be on safari with. His dry sense of humour combined with his ability to make you feel at home leaves you feeling that you have met a lifelong friend. His knowledge of the bush extends far beyond the big and well known animals as he will pay attention to the detail of each ecosystem such as the relationship of a dung beetle to the bat eared fox.

He is also an expert ornithologist and in case you have not already had your fill of knowledge in the day he will interest you at night with all the names of the stars and the behaviour of the moon. If one of your interests lies in wildlife photography it is of great benefit to be with Chris as, being a talented and skilled photographer himself, will take you through the steps to achieve the best shot.

JOHN MOLLER

Third-generation Kenyan, John Moller, has been leading safaris for over 30 years and is renowned for his extensive knowledge of the African bush.

Having led expeditions into the remotest parts of Sudan, Ethiopia, Zaire, Kenya and Tanzania, John earned the title ‘Honorary Game Warden’ in both Sudan and Kenya and was appointed Official Tourist Consultant to the President of Ethiopia; he also worked on one of the most famous scenes in the film Out of Africa, wherein Robert Redford and Meryl Streep were charged by a lion.

Latterly, John, Alex Walker and John’s wife, Kire Godal (herself a respected wildlife film-maker) have founded Malaika Media, which produces conservation documentaries.

RICHARD CORCORAN

Born in Nairobi, Richard has spent all his life in Kenya, building up the most extensive product knowledge of East Africa, and all aspects of tourism.

He started his life in tourism at a very early age, when he was manager of a Safari Club in the Great Rift Valley. He then went on to run a bush camp in Tsavo National Park in eastern Kenya. Richard subsequently worked for a large tour operator in Nairobi, for 11 years starting as a tour guide, and working his way up to operations manager, handling 20,000 clients a year. His wide experience and professionalism ensured that the company maintained it’s excellent reputation in field operations, client relations and reliable transportation.

In 1997 Richard together with his wife Annie established Liberty Africa Safaris. Operating a wide variety of safaris throughout East Africa, Richard continues to manage Liberty’s day-to-day activities as Director of Operations. More recently teaming up with old friends Richard created “The African Connoisseur” a vehicle for spending more time in his favoured vocation as a safari guide.

Richard is a naturalist and conservationist, who is always ready to share his love of the African bush with clients and friends. A fount of knowledge and a fabulous fireside companion, Richard bursts with inherited Irish tribal passion and will expound colourful fact and theory.
