Historical City tour

This visit of the most spectacular historical points of Salvador takes place specially in the Pelourinho. A true immersion in the heart of the history of this country, this visit is not to be missed.

On the way a stop at the Farol da Barra (Barra Lighthouse) offers a panoramic view of the entrance to Baía de Todos os Santos. This lighthouse is built on the foundations of a Portuguese fort that as of the 16th century defends the entrance to the bay.

Continue along the Victoria Corridor, an avenue with trees hundreds of years old that still shelter some imposingly large houses, witness to a history of ostentation.

Arriving in the historical section, stop at Tomé de Souza’s square. From the look-out you can observe the lower city and port, the Mercado Modelo and the Lacerda Elevator. Connecting the 2 parts of the city and allowing access to more than 30000 people a day, this elevator reaches a height of 72 meters. From this point, the rest of the visit’s on foot. Crossing Praça da Sé (Se’s square), a large place recently redesigned, we arrive in Terreiro de Jesus square, surrounded by houses with colonial façades. Visit the Basilicas Cathedral, erected on the site of an ancient 16th century chapel. Visit the São Francisco de Assis Church (1713), considered the best example of Portuguese baroque style and the most magnificent in Brazil. This church is part of a group, which also comprises a monastery, and the Igreja da Ordem Terceira de São Francisco (Church of the Third Order of Saint Francis).

Continue discovering the mysteries of the historic centre, walking on the sloping streets. The colored buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries form an architectural group unique to the Americas, classified as World Monument by Unesco.
