Music in Burgenland ...
Already in the Middle Ages music was important in Burgenland. Later Joseph Haydn wrote great works of art for his patrons, the princes of Esterházy. Nowadays his compositions are being played every year at the popular Haydn Festival. And, of course, during performances of the Haydn Quartett. Franz Liszt, born in Raiding, was one of the really brilliant artists of his time. Fellow composer, Johann Strauss, wrote operettas such as "The Gypsy Baron", "The Merry Widow" and "Die Fledermaus" (The Bat) - today these works range among the standard repertoire of the famous Mörbisch Lake Festival.
